Located just off Interstate 80 approximately 12 miles from Auburn in Placer County, the town of Colfax began life as railroad construction camp in 1865 as part of the effort to complete the transcontinental railroad. As the iron rails were being laid up the steep slope of the Sierra on their way to Donner Summit, large temporary camps were put up to house and feed the many workers involved in the job. It was Camp 20 that later became Colfax. Today, Colfax is a close-knit community of some 2,500 residents who enjoy small-town living at its finest. Yet, all the amenities of city life are just a short distance down the hill in the county seat of Auburn. Home prices range from $150,000 for smaller single-family homes to $900,000 for hilltop estates with spectacular views of the area.
